Open to All Alberta Pharmacists registered with the Alberta College of Pharmacists.


Session Description: 

This session will provide an evidence-based review of drug induced QT prolongation. You will learn how to determine if a patient may be at risk of drug induced cardiac arrhythmias, which classes of medications are typically responsible and when drug therapy should be stopped.

Peter graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Univeristy of Alberta. Currently, he is a Clinical Practice Leader for Alberta Health Services in the Edmonton zone. His clinical practice is in diabetes management at the Edmonton Remand Centre. He has a passion for pharmacist practice and is a co-facilitator for the RxA Injection Course for Pharmacists (Edmonton).


Session Objectives: 

At the end of this program you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of how to obtain QTc information from an ECG
  • Name common classes of medications associated with prolonged QT interval
  • Identify risk factors that may predispose a patient to have torsades de pointes
  • Identify resources to evaluate the possible effect of medication on the QT interval.
