Session Description: 

The 2019 influenza season is fast approaching! This program will provide an overview of the policies and procedures for pharmacists participating in the delivery of publicly funded influenza vaccine this year. Join Betty as she discusses the rules, regulations, products and resources pharmacists need to be familiar with. Betty and Bev will then review some communication, pain management and distraction methods to help you with needle-adverse patients. They will also demonstrate holding techniques used when administering an injection to a child and give an overall review of injection landmarking in all demographics.

Betty Golightly’s career includes over 27 years of community practice. She has a Foundation in Travel Medicine from the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow). Betty successfully challenged the International Society of Travel Medicine Certificate of Knowledge Examination (Portugal). Currently, Betty is an instructor in the Pharmacy Assistant Program at S.A.I.T. and the owner and operator of Go Travel Health where she does travel health consultations and presentations.

 

Beverly Lounsbury, RN

Health Management Clinic, Calgary

 

Beverley’s career includes education in a variety of medical fields. She taught both parents and professionals “Child Birth Education”, educated nursing care facility employees in areas of patient care. She was involved in the Calgary Health Region’s “Meningococcal Immunization Program” in 2001 and with the Public Health District where she participated in the immunization of school age programs, baby wellness and flu clinics. Currently, Beverley provides education on Health and Lifestyle issues at the Health Management Clinic, South Calgary Primary Care Network (SCPCN).

 

 

Session Objectives: 

At the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Describe how to access the references & resources available for pharmacists administering influenza vaccine
  • Describe policies & procedures including rules & regulations for the publicly funded influenza vaccine program
  • Describe the specific influenza vaccines to be administered in the 2019-2020 season in Alberta and how to utilize the influenza consent forms
  • Describe some communication, pain management & distraction methods for needle-adverse patients
  • Explore holding techniques used when administering an injection to a child
  • Review landmarking in all demographics
