Target Audience:

Open to Alberta Pharmacists registered with the Alberta College of Pharmacy.

 

Session Description: 

 

    • As a follow-up to our opioid presentation in the spring, RxA and ACP are offering a panel presentation exploring the issues pharmacists might face related to substance and harm reduction.
    • This harm reduction focused program is aimed at helping pharmacists discover communication strategies to assist in the building and maintenance of professional relationships with patients requiring harm reduction measures.
    • Pharmacists can learn about interdisciplinary collaboration, stigma, the ethical aspects of care in harm reduction, and how to apply harm reduction principles in their practice.
    • Finally, the interactive and patient-centred session will also review the various harm reduction medications and treatment options used in opioid dependence.

Session Objectives: 
At the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a patient-centered approach to care for patients who are at increased risk of opioid dependence and addiction;
  • Explain the theories and methodologies of reducing stigma and harm reduction;
  • Provide patient perspectives on the importance of reducing stigma and harm reduction and describe how pharmacists can better care for these patients;
  • Illustrate how pharmacists can apply harm reduction principles in their practice;
  • Identify ethical issues associated with harm reduction and describe the responsibilities pharmacists have to provide care to these patients;
  • Explore communication strategies to use with patients during difficult or sensitive conversations;
  • Demonstrate how to build and maintain professional relationships with patients requiring harm reduction measures or medications;
  • Depict the importance of collaborating with other healthcare professionals in harm reduction.
  • Describe the various harm reduction medications and treatment options used in opioid dependence.
