Description: 

This session will provide an update on what's new in hypertension. Additionally, various patient case scenarios will be presented to participants to highlight application of hypertension management principles and rationale for decision-making. This session is intended to be interactive and practical, with sharing of cases to illustrate approaches to patient care. Relevant principles such as drug selection, dosing, prescribing and deprescribing, montoring and follow-up will be discussed. 

  

Presenter:  

Ann Thompson,  BScPharm, PharmD, ACPR

Since moving to Edmonton in 2006, Ann has practiced clinically at the Univeristy of Alberta Hypertension Clinic. Ann works collaboratively with internists and nurses to provide care to patients with hypertension, and teaches hypertension and blood pressure measurement to students at the Faculty. 

 

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of this program, you should be able to:

  1. Outline recommended methods for measuing blood pressure to manage patients with hypertension.
  2. Review selected new recommendations by Hypertension Canada for the treatment and prevention of hypertension.
  3. Apply principles of drug therapy to manage hypertension given the desired BP target and patient-specific factors.
  4. Provide appropriate care to patients with hypertension, including monitoring and follow-up.
