Dr. Priya Samuel is the recipient of the inaugural Excellence in Patient Care Award.
Priya is a dedicated clinical pharmacist whose commitment to patient care has made a mark on the pulmonary and general internal medicine units at the University of Alberta Hospital. Since joining the pulmonary team in January 2024, Priya has been an invaluable asset, combining deep knowledge of pharmacology with an unwavering focus on patient-centred care. Her exemplary leadership, mentorship, and collaborative spirit have profoundly impacted her colleagues and the patients she serves.
In her role, Priya goes above and beyond to ensure that each patient receives the highest standard of care. One standout example of her dedication is when she successfully worked to secure non-group drug coverage for a patient requiring isavuconazole therapy for chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. By applying for the Specialized Treatment Expense Drug Program (STEDT), Priya facilitated the patient’s access to essential medications, improving adherence and helping the patient be discharged earlier.

In addition to her direct patient care, Priya’s mentorship of pharmacy students, residents, and interdisciplinary team members has been nothing short of transformative. Through hands-on training, she has supported the growth of her colleagues, sharing her wealth of knowledge on complex pulmonary conditions, drug therapies, and therapeutic drug monitoring. Her passion for education has fostered a learning environment that encourages continuous professional development and curiosity.
