The Bowl of Hygeia is awarded annually to a pharmacist who has compiled an outstanding record of community service which, apart from their specific identification as a pharmacist, reflects well on the profession.

Merv Bashforth is more than just a pharmacist; he is a community pillar in Jasper, Alberta. With over 30 years of service, Merv has earned a reputation as a compassionate leader who consistently prioritizes the well-being of others. His role as a pharmacist extends far beyond dispensing medications—he is a steady presence in times of need, offering guidance, support, and a listening ear to anyone who comes his way.

Merv’s connection to the Jasper community is undeniable. When he walks through town, he’s greeted by name—not just for his expertise as a pharmacist, but for his genuine kindness and care for the people around him. His warm heart, tireless work ethic, and generosity have made him beloved in the community. During difficult moments, Merv’s ability to remain calm and focused has earned him the respect and admiration of his patients and peers. One local healthcare professional notes, “We’re so lucky to have Merv in this town. His ‘chair-side’ manner is something remarkable. It exudes competence. I strive to emulate him.”

Merv’s leadership shines brightest during times of crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, with uncertainty and supply shortages looming, Merv worked tirelessly to keep his pharmacy operational. He ensured that essential medications reached those in isolation and that healthcare workers had the supplies they needed. But it was during the 2024 Jasper Wildfire Complex when Merv’s true character was most evident. Even as the fire threatened his home and business, Merv remained steadfast, providing care to displaced residents and ensuring that patients received necessary medications, no matter where they were.

Beyond his pharmacy, Merv has been deeply involved in local organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce and the Jasper Freeride Ski Club. He has also lent his expertise in mental health by speaking publicly on the subject and offering Naloxone training to Alberta Peace Officers, always looking for ways to support and improve the community he loves.

Merv has served in multiple leadership roles within the healthcare profession, including as President of the Alberta College of Pharmacy. His influence extends beyond his patients, contributing to improving healthcare systems through his work with the Minister’s Advisory Committee on Health and the Alberta Provincial Mental Health Advisory Committee. Merv’s dedication to his patients, his community, and the broader healthcare landscape embodies the spirit of the Bowl of Hygeia Award for Outstanding Community Service. He is more than just a pharmacist—he is a true leader, committed
